ATTENTION
Some of the pictures and stories shown on the following pages may be disturbing. In many of these cases, the stories are tragic. People have been seriously injured and in some instances, killed. Those involved frequently have suffered very significant, sometimes permanent injuries. The patients, their families, and their friends have all suffered
as a result of these events.

We often receive calls from patients or their families asking us about what happened during an incident. The following photos and stories are provided, similar to a newspaper account, for educational and informational purposes. It is our hope that through education, tragic incidents such as these can be prevented.

Every RVFD member that responded to these calls send their thoughts and condolences
to everyone touched by these incidents.

Single Vehicle with Entrapment

On Thurdsday December 16th 2010 at approximately 1040 hrs Rescue Local 27-1 was alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment on Highland Avenue. Ambulance 25-70 responded with 2. Once on the scene command 27 advised of a one vehicle rollover with both patients still in the vehicle. Command requested an engine out of 25 to be added to the call bringing Engine 25-11 with a crew of 3 under the direction of Assistant Chief Scott Swick. One patient self extricated and the other patient was assisted out by volunteers from Wiley Ford. The vehicle had slid off of a driveway over an embankment shearing off a gas meter. Mountaineer Gas was requested to the scene. Ambulance 25-70 obtained 2 signed patient refusals and returned in service. Engine 25-11 returned in service after assisting on the accident scene.

Residential Box 25-1 Working Trailer Fire

On Thursday December 9th 2010 at approximately 1630 hours Residential Box 25-1 was struck for a working house fire at the corner of Pownall Drive and Robin Drive in Carpendale. Engine 25-13 responded with a crew of 5 under the direction of Chief Steve Shipley. Enroute to the call a heavy column of black smoke was visible. Mineral County Communications had already upgraded the call to the working fire dispatch. Upon arrival Chief 25 advised Mineral of a fully involved trailer fire, took command, and advised Engine 27-11 from Wiley Ford to take the plug at the corner of Pownall Drive and Buddy Lane and lay a 5 inch supply line into Engine 25-13. Crews went to work to protect an exposure on the Charlie Side of the structure that had already sustained heat damage. Deputy Chief 8, Jeff Baird handled operations during the incident. Two 1 3/4 attack lines were pulled of Engine 25-13 and one off of Engine 27-11. Fire was knocked down and salvage and overhaul was completed. Units returned in service approximately 2 hours after dispatch.

Three Alarm Commercial with Entrapment

On Friday December 3, 2010 at 0430 hours Mineral County Communications alerted the Ridgeley Volunteers on the working commercial business fire with entrapment on East Main Street in Frostburg. Engine-Air 25 responded with a crew of 9 and Chief 25 (Shipley). Chief 16 arrived on the scene to find a well involved apartment fire to the rear of the pizza shop with entrapment on the second floor, due to the intensity of the fire the two subjects on the second floor were unable to get out and have perished. Numerous fire companies from Allegany, Mineral, and Garrett Counties responded to the scene. Two victims in another apartment were transported by EMS units to Western Maryland Medical Center (RMC), Two firefighters and one police officer were also transported to the local hospital, none of the injuries were life-threatening. The fire is under investgation by the Maryland State Fire Marshall Office. All units where on the scene for 7 1/2hours before returning in-service.

25 House To Paw Paw for the Multi Structure's

In the evening hours of Election Day 2010 Morgan County Communications alerted fire units from multiple companies from multiple jurisdictions covering two states for a multi structure fire on Winchester Street in Paw Paw, WV located in western Morgan County. The fire was dispatched around 2100 hours, as emergency dispatchers with Morgan County confirmed that four structures were on fire in the area of Winchester Street. Rescue Engine 32 (Paw Paw Fire) arrived on scene and confirmed a fully involved structure. Command quickly requested the 2nd and 3rd alarms sounded. Fire is out and everyone came home safe!!

Units on the Scene: Paw Paw 32, Great Cacapon 2, Oldtown 13, Slainesville 5, levels 6, Reynolds Store 20, Gaineboro 16, Ridgeley 25, South Morgan 3, Berkeley Springs 1, Hancock 5, District 16 7; Orleans 43 and Springfield 42

Frostburg keeps the Ridgeley Volunteer's Busy

On Friday October 15th at approximately 4pm the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department was alerted for the Residential Working Fire at 77 North Water Street in Frostburg. Engine 25-13 responded with a crew of 7 under the direction of Deputy Chief Cheryl Shipley. The engine was due on the call for the air assignment. Upon arrival the crew headed to command and were directed to assist with the fire attack on the second floor, while the engine operator stayed back at the engine and set-up to fill air bottles. The crew also assited with vertical ventilation of the structure by utilizing Truck 16. Fire was brought under control and crews assisted with extensive overhaul operations. Units were on scene for approximately 4 hours.

Units on the scene were: Frostburg (Engine 164, Truck 16, Squad 16 and Command Unit 16), Shaft (Engine 171), Mt. Savage (Engine 152), Midland (Squad 18), Ridgeley (Engine 25-13), and Clarysville (Engine-Tanker 14). Eastern Garrett Engine 81 stood by at Frostburg Station 2 throughout the incident and was later brought to the scene to assist with overhaul. great job by all crews involved.

Ridgeley Volunteers Respond to Frostburg

On October 13th 2010 at approximately 1500 hours the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department was alerted for the Residential Working Fire at 147 Ormand Street in Frostburg. Engine 25-13 responded with a crew of 5 under the direction of Assistant Chief Rodney Twyman. The engine was met on scene by Chief Steve Shipley and the crew was upgraded to 6. The crew from the engine was split up on scene to perform various tasks. Three of the crew members assisted with interior operations, Chief and Assistant Chief utilized Frostburg Fire Department's Truck and made their way to the roof to assist with removing vent cover while the operator of the engine filled air bottles from the scene. Units were on scene approximately an hour and a half. A good initial knock was made by the crew members on Frostburg's engine which contained the fire to the attic and one bedroom of the residence.

Units on scene were: Frostburg (Engine 164, Truck 16, Command Unit 16), Shaft (Engine 171, Engine 172), Mt Savage (Engine 152), Midland (Squad 18), Ridgeley (Engine 25-13). Units on standby were Eastern Garrett Engine 81 and LaVale Truck 2.

Sunday Is Anything But A Day Of Rest For The Volunteers From Ridgeley

On Sunday Septmeber 26th the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department handled several incidents along with taking both engines for their annual pumps test at the Maryland Fire Rescue Institute. The morning started off with an ambulance call where Ambulance 25-70 responded and transported to RMC. Once back in station the crew from Station 25 was alerted for an ATV accident in the Lakewwod Subdivision. Ambulance 25-70 responded to that scene as well and transported one patient to RMC. During the ATV accident Engine 25-13 was taken to pumps test at MFRI where it tested and passed. While there 25-70 was clearing the hospital from the ATV accident and was alerted for a fall on Detrick Road in Wiley Ford. Patient was once again transported to RMC by the ambulance. Engine 25-13 returned from pumps test and then Engine 25-11 headed to pumps test where it also tested and passed. All units returned to station around 5pm Sunday after a very busy day.

After being granted a break for a short period the tones dropped once again for a Working House Fire Box 3-2 at 12503 Bedford Road. Engine 25-13 responded with 5 under the direction of Chief Steve Shipley. The engine was the 3rd arriving engine. The crew from the engine reported to command and were assigned to assist with fire attack while the operator of the engine was busy filling air bottles, pulling an electric line to the residence to set-up ventilation, pulling an attack line for the RIT crew and providing scene lighting with the lightower. The crew off the engine made their way to the attic and assisted with extinguishment and also did some salvage and overhaul. The engine operated on scene for approimately an hour and a half. A quick knock was made limiting the fire spread to the attic only saving the downstairs of the residence.

Units on the scene were: Bedford Road (Engine-Rescue 3, Engine-Tanker 3, Squad 3, and Utility 3), Bowmans Addition (Engine 1-1-2), Ridgeley (Engine 25-13), Bowling Green (Quint-Rescue 8), Lavale (Squad 2), Baltimore Pike (Tanker 4), Flintstone (Tanker 12), District 16 (Tanker 7), Ellerslie (Engine-Tanker 6), and LaVale Rescue (Ambulance 374). Wiley Ford's Engine 27-11 stood by at Co.3 during the incident.

25 House Alerted For The Large Wildfire

On Saturday September 25th the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department was alerted for a large woods fire in the Corriganville area of Western Maryland. Engine 25-13 responded with 6 under the direction of Assistant Chief Rodney Twyman. Engine 25-13 was requested to stage at Co. 5's (Corriganville) station with manpower being shuttled to the mountain by ATV's. The crew from the engine were shuttled to the mountain and assisted in firefighting and containment operations. Due to the vast majority of units from the tri-state area being at the fire the Tri-Towns Fire Department transferred an engine to Station 25. Aprroximately 20 acres were burned during the incident.

Station 25 Alerted For The Motor Vehicle

In the early morning hours of Thursday September 23rd the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department was alerted for a vehicle accident with an unconcious patient on Mineral Street in Ridgeley. Engine 25-11 responded with 5 under the direction of Captain Scott Swick and Ambulance 25-70 responded with 4. Enroute it was determined that the accident wasn't on Mineral Street but actually in the Carepndale area. Engine 25-11 was met along side the road by a subject who took them back to the accident scene on Kingsford Drive. Upon arrival all but one victims were out of the vehicle who was still inside the vehicle unconcious. The crew from the ambulance went to work packing the patient and loading him into the ambulance. ALS was requested and District 16 Medic 347 responded and met 25-70 enroute to Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. ALS interventions were provided to the patient and he was transported Priority 2 and later upgraded to a Priority 1 patient. Units were on scene for a little over an hour.

Ridgeley Alerted For The Commercial Box

On Sunday September 12th the Ridgeley Vounteer Fire Department was alerted for the Commercial Alarm at the Legz Club in Wiley Ford. Engine 25-13 responded with 6 under the direction of Assistant Chief Rodney Twyman. Chief 27 was on-scene advising there was smoke in the building. The engine crew assisted Wiley Ford's firefighters in locating the cause. Units returned in service after approximately a half hour on-scene.

 Station 25 Alerted For The Hang Glider On The Tree

On Friday September 10th a hang glider struck a tree and became lodged in the tree shortly after takeoff from the Seymour Road area. Ambulance 25-70 responded on the call to assist the Wiley Ford Fire Department. The subject was stuck in a tree approximately 40 feet in the air. Crews worked to remove the subject who signed a refusal on the call

 25 House Runs Trailer In Carpendale

On Monday September 6th the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department was alerted for a structure fire on Miller Road in the area of the Doris Marks Bridge. Engine 25-13 responded on the call under the direction of Assistant Chief Rodney Twyman. Enroute heavy smoke was visible and the call was upgraded to a working trailer fire upon arrival of the engine. The engine crew went to work in extinguishing the fire with the help of the crew from Engine 27-11. Engine 34 laid into the hydrant with 5 inch and supplied Engine 27-12 which relayed to Engine 25-13 who was operating (2) 1 3/4 handlines. The fire was quickly extinguished and crews returned in service after being on the scene a little less than 2 hours. Miller Road Command was Assistant Chief 25 Rodney Twyman, Operations Chief 5 Jeff Dehaven, and interior was Captain 25 Scott Swick.

Units on the scene: Ridgeley (Engine25-13, Ambulance 25-70), Wiley Ford (Engine 27-11, 27-12, and Rescue 27), Short Gap (Engine 34, RE34), Frostburg (Engine 164), Bowling Green (Quint-Rescue 8), District 16 (Engine 7-1, Tanker 7), Corriganville (RIT5), Bedford Road (Squad 3), Fort Ashby (Squad 37), Patterson Creek (Engine-Tanker 35) and Shaft (Engine 171) was on stand-by at Station 25.
